With the emergence of new, unconventional gaming platforms (like the iPhone), I really think the mid-core gamer crowd presents some great market opportunities.

I am a mid-core gamer
Some time ago, I stumbled across the guys at 8bitrocket and their Mid-Core Gamer Manifesto. I immediately related to the profile they've put together. For the most part, this perfectly describes my current gaming inclinations: too busy with daily life to be a hardcore gamer, but more interested in compelling, immersive gameplay than the typical casual gamer.

This is an interesting trend that I've seen developing for a while now among the crowd of "former-hardcore" gamers who now have full-time jobs and/or families. What games are you playing right now (or want to play) that fall into the mid-core capable category?
Not to punt to the 8bitrocket guys, but they actually nailed a couple of Xbox 360 game titles in their manifesto: Puzzle Quest and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Both focus on high quality gameplay and really compelling game mechanics. Very accommodating save game functionality lets you easily consume the game 30 minutes at a time.
Some newer titles I would also highlight along the same lines: Fallout 3 and Crayon Physics Deluxe.
Oh! Let me also mention another game I stumbled upon last year and had a great time with: Mount & Blade. The graphics and technical aspects are sub-par, but the game design is really great. Very realistic medieval combat action make this a great departure from other FPS-derived fantasy games.
It's also an indie production by a Turkish husband and wife team. Very cool.
The game that jumped into my mind first was Fable 2, which I completed over the weekend. Also for Xbox 360, it is basically a series of primary and side quests that can each be digested in roughly half an hour or less.
Also, any shooter or strategy game that allows for single or multi-player skirmishing. Unreal Tournament, Command and Conquer, Advance Wars (GBA and Nintendo DS) and Field Commander (PSP) are all wonderful for squeezing a couple rounds into a lunch hour.
